How to Become a Derby Doll
The San Diego Derby Dolls welcome new and transfer skaters! The Dolls are made up of women age 18 and over, and our Junior league, the Juvenile Dollinquents, is for girls ages 8-17. We are the only team in the world Ranked Nationally in both Banked and Flat Track.
Already skate for an established flat or banked track league and are visiting San Diego looking to drop in on a practice? Click here to fill out the visitor's form.
We're also always looking for men and women of all ages to join our Stripes Crew of Referees and non-skating officials.
No experience is required. Even if you have never roller skated a day in your life, the Dolls can teach you! Every new adult league member joins the Derby Dolls via our Boot Camp program. During this time you will get personal instruction and assessments from veteran Derby Doll Coaches. Transfer skaters usually breeze through Boot Camp quickly to make their way into our bouting ranks.
What to Expect at Orientation
* Our Boot Camp Coaches will introduce themselves by reviewing our league history, goals and achievements, and they'll go over some basic FAQs that most new Campers ask, including:
o When Boot Camp is held and what skaters can expect from Boot Camp practices
o Boot Camp levels and testing protocols
o Practice time and financial commitments for Boot Camp and after graduation
o How Boot Camp graduates get recruited to a bouting team
o A gear overview, with info on requirements and recommendations on fit and brands
o Safety and insurance recommendations and requirements
* We will also be performing a basic off-skates physical orientation, so please bring water and wear comfortable workout clothing & athletic shoes. This orientation is designed to give future Dolls an idea of our workout regimen, and help interested new athletes determine if they're ready to start training on wheels. We'll run through basic skating postures and skills and give you a baseline idea of the balance, fitness, agility, endurance and strength you'll develop as a Boot Camper. Our coaches will also provide guidance for any participant who would like to be given further direction on how to improve their general fitness in preparation for learning how to skate.
What to Bring to Orientation
* Water
* Workout clothing & athletic shoes
* A photocopy of your Driver's License or State-issued ID. No one may enter our practice facility without valid identification.
* $45 for USARS insurance if you decide to sign up for Boot Camp. USARS accepts personal checks, cashiers checks and credit cards.

Referee Recruiting
As referees, we face a fast paced, but very rewarding environment - working under two sets of rules, with skaters and officials from leagues both local and national. There are many positions we need to fill both for bouts, and at practice, in order to provide a safe, fair, and fun environment for the skaters and fans. And that’s why we need you!
If you can’t (yet) skate, we (and the Dolls) will teach you. And there are many positions off skates as well that are in need of people willing to learn the rules and everybody needs to learn the rules!
What’s the time commitment?
We’d like you to commit to 8 hours a month; that comes to about one practice per week. Bouts are generally on Saturday nights, and attendance at the preceding Monday scrimmage is usually mandatory. Many of us spend a lot more time on Roller Derby, but that’s the least we expect.
What’s the money commitment?
Membership in USA Roller Sports, which costs $45 per year, is mandatory for everyone. For skating referees, stripes, skates, and personal protection equipment all are required. For non-skating officials, a black uniform and a whistle is just about all that you’ll need.
How do I start?
